A Team of Champions

The team was led by two of the greatest figure skaters of all time: Carol Heiss and David Jenkins. Heiss had won the Olympic gold medal in 1956 and 1960, while Jenkins had won the world championship in 1957 and 1958. But it was not just their individual accomplishments that made this team special. They were also a close-knit group of friends and teammates who supported each other through thick and thin.

In addition to Heiss and Jenkins, the team included Barbara Roles, Maribel Owen, Bradley Lord, Robert Brewer, Laurence Owen, and Ronald Ludington. Each member of the team brought their own unique skills and talents to the table, and together they formed a formidable force.

The Cold War Context

The 1961 World Figure Skating Championships were held in Prague, Czechoslovakia, at the height of the Cold War. The United States and the Soviet Union were locked in a fierce rivalry, and the competition was seen as a proxy battle between the two superpowers.

The Soviet team was favored to win, but the Americans were determined to prove that they were the best. The team trained tirelessly, and they were ready to give it their all.
