Rivers was drafted by the Atlanta Hawks with the 31st overall pick in the 1983 NBA draft. He played for the Hawks for three seasons before being traded to the Los Angeles Clippers. Rivers played for the Clippers for seven seasons and helped the team reach the playoffs for the first time in franchise history.

In 1991, Rivers was traded to the New York Knicks. He played for the Knicks for one season before being traded to the San Antonio Spurs. Rivers played for the Spurs for three seasons and helped the team win the NBA championship in 1999.

Coaching Career

Rivers began his coaching career in 1999 as an assistant coach with the Orlando Magic. He was named head coach of the Boston Celtics in 2004. Rivers led the Celtics to the NBA championship in 2008 and was named NBA Coach of the Year in 2000.

In 2013, Rivers was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers. He led the Clippers to the playoffs in each of his five seasons with the team. Rivers was fired by the Clippers in 2018.

In 2020, Rivers was hired as head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers. He led the 76ers to the Eastern Conference semifinals in his first season with the team.
